The Bournemouth and Boscombe Light
Opera Company, or BBLOC as it has become commonly known was founded in 1954.
The first two shows, ‘Katinka’ and ‘Night in Venice’, were performed at the
old Hippodrome Theatre in Boscombe. The company moved to the Pavilion
Theatre, Bournemouth, in 1956, and this venue has been our ‘home’ ever
since.
In addition to the annual shows, the company has produced many concerts over
the years at various venues. They have ranged from big ones at the
Pavilion Theatre and the Winter Gardens to tiny ones at little village or
church halls out in the wilds of Dorset and Hampshire – complete with
spiders backstage, dubiously tuned pianos and outside loo’s - and
middle-sized ones in between. It has been a good way of bringing the
talents of the company to the notice of a wider audience, publicising
forthcoming shows and raising money for charity.
One of the objects of the company is to raise funds for
charitable purposes and BBLOC have been very successful in this area
throughout their 50 years.
